Bookkeeping basics every Pasifika small business owner should know

ACA Consult NZ2 September 2026

Clean books aren't just for tax time. They tell you whether your business is actually making money. Here are the essentials.

Bookkeeping can feel intimidating, but at its heart it's just recording what comes in and what goes out. Once it's a habit, you'll wonder how you ever ran your business blind.

The three things to track

  • Income: every dollar that comes in, dated and described.
  • Expenses: every dollar that goes out, with the receipt.
  • Owner drawings: money you take out for personal use.

Separate your accounts

Open a separate bank account for the business. Mixing personal and business money is the number one reason books become a nightmare at tax time.

Reconcile monthly

Once a month, match your records to your bank statement. This catches mistakes early and keeps your numbers trustworthy.

This is Stage 2 — Control. When your numbers are clean, decisions get easier.
